COMPONENTS OF THE CUBAN REVOLUTION:

        1952: Fulgencio Batista seizes power during the Cuban presidential election because he was unhappy with the resurgence of corruption in Cuba and for fear of losing. Many Cuban citizens were unhappy with this coup including Fidel Castro who promptly started planning Batista's demise.

          1953: On July 26th, 160 revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro Attacked the Moncado barracks in Santiago, Cuba trying to get fire arms and munitions for his revolution. His attack failed leading Fidel and his brother Raul to be tried. During this trial, Fidel Castro gave his famous speech "history will absolve me" in his defence. He and his brother were sent to prison.

          1955: Fidel and Raul Castro are released from prison due to international pressure. The Castro brothers flew to Mexico to plan the next move in there revolution. While in Mexico Fidel and Raul met Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos, two revolutionaries wanting to help in the fight against Fulgencio Batista.

1957: On January 17, Fidel Castro earned his first real success and started attracting followers around and in Cuba. On march 13 university students launched an attack in Havana on the presidential palace. It was not successful.

1959: On January 1, Fulgencio Batista fled from Cuba after resigning because it had become apparent that he would lose. On January 5, Manuel Urrutia became the 20th president of Cuba. On February 16, Fidel Castro became the Prime Minister of Cuba.
